Susan Safford | “Devil’s Canyon, John Day”

Our assignment was to paint a landscape. I love Oregon’s canyon country in general and the John Day River in particular. I built on what I learned from Hockney about really looking at a river, the riparian land masses and their relation to the sky. It was a challenge to depict the shadowed ravines of the canyon and the river bottom. I muted sky to grey to keep the desert light from being too intense and distracting in order to accentuate the river's color wonders and the sagebrush.
