Jessica Allison-Bourne | “Hecate”

An ink drawing in black, white, and gold. Three roads intersect in the center bottom of the image and, there, is a pedestal with the symbol of Hecate on the front. On the pedestal are three women standing with their backs together, each facing one of the roads. There are wolves on either side of the front-facing figure, who is holding torches. The figure on the right is holding a set of keys and the figure on the left is holding a ritual knife. In the sky behind the figures is a triple moon symbol. There is an owl flying above the figures. The scene is set at night, and most of the illuminated edges are white, while the background is black.

During this term I focused on reimagining mythic characters and archetypes in my own original style. This is an ink drawing of the Greek Goddess Hecate (Hekate). I included symbols that relate to her story, most notably the crossroads that she was said to protect, and the torches she used to guide Demeter into the Underworld to retrieve Persephone. In this piece, I experimented with different uses of positive and negative space and highlights and shadows. Metallic gold enamel paint was the final addition, which served to create more depth and call attention to key areas.
