Course Description

Introduces foundational concepts associated with patient care, assessment, and patient monitoring.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify patient care assessment parameters for respiration rates, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, mentation and cardiac rhythms.  
  2.  Identify key patient care concepts associated with young adults, adults and geriatric patients.

Course Activities and Design

Identify normal values for all vitals associated with patient care.  Use online study guides to demonstrate knowledge of patient care concepts.  Use online scenarios to guide patient care judgment, patient monitoring and situational awareness.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1. Gather and interpret patient vital sign data

2. Employ proper charting techniques

3. Evaluate recorded lab values, allergies, and precautions from patient chart

4. Analyze date created by physiologic monitoring devices used during the course of the interventional procedure

5. Proper techniques in the management of intravenous (IV) therapies

6. Perform mandatory  "timeout" prior to beginning all procedures

7. Required consent documentation and content for procedures

8. Age specific care concepts
