Course Description

Continues the development of swimming and water safety skills in both shallow and deep water. Introduces new strokes, including breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate “Adult Swim - Improving Skills and Swimming Strokes” skills using standards set by the American Red Cross.

2. Develop and demonstrate proper skills in order to advance into the PCC Advanced Swimming class.

3. Apply knowledge and respect for water safety and rules.

4. Improve swimming fitness and overall physical conditioning.

Course Activities and Design

1)      Perform static and dynamic skill drills.

2)      Apply knowledge in performing appropriate warm up, cool down, and flexibility exercises.

3)      Watch video, instructor, and student demonstrations.

4)      Demonstrate proper use of equipment including fins, paddles, pull buoys, kick boards, and inner tubes.

5)      Participate in water safety/rules discussions, demonstrations, and skills practice.

6)      Participate in beginning, ongoing, and end-of-term American Red Cross and PCC skills and fitness evaluations.

7)      Learn about the skills required for the Advanced Swimming class at PCC.

8)      Participate in group and individual instruction.

9)      Develop swimming fitness by participating in lap swimming and training drills.

1)      Beginning, ongoing, and end-of-term skill and fitness assessments.

2)      Class participation.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1)      Buoyancy and breath control, including deep-water bobbing, bobbing to safety, and rotary breathing.

2)      Water entry and exit, including jumping and diving from side of pool into deep water.

3)      Locomotion, including front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and sculling on back.

4)      Turns, including changing direction while swimming, and turning at the wall.

5)   Personal safety and rescue, including safe diving rules, treading water, learn rescue breathing and cold water safety, and become familiar with CPR
