Course Description

Provides a variety of independent physical activities to improve lifelong fitness and wellness, while allowing access to designated PCC Physical Education facilities when classes are not scheduled. This class does not count towards PCC degrees or PCC financial aid. Check with appropriate institution or high school for transferability of this class. Consultation with instructor may be required. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Additional purposes of PE 10 Activity Program:
    
1. Serve as activity vehicle for students unable or who choose not to enroll in normal course offerings. 

2. Promote an independent and individual approach to fitness for the student not wishing traditional, transferable credit.

3. Experience activities geared to individual differences and varying activity choices.

4. Serve as gateway course for student's desiring future enrollment in traditional, transfer courses. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Record regular physical activity sessions each week for ten weeks.
  • Practice skills and patterns that will improve physical function and contribute to a lifelong fitness and wellness program.

Course Activities and Design

  • During Week One of each term, students should complete an initial check-in by submitting the PAR-Q or other health history paperwork.
  • A meeting with an instructor or facilities staff may be required and special programs may be created in instances of special physical needs. 
  • Students using PCC fitness and recreation facilities need to follow all PCC and campus-specific policies regarding time availability, safety, proper techniques, check-in, etc.
  • Students may use open PE, fitness, recreation facilities when no instructional classes are scheduled for that facility and when approved staff are on duty if assistance is needed.
  • Students must provide appropriate clothing for activities in which they participate. 
  • Students may use a locker, towels, and locker room facilities (if available) with proof of registration in PE 10.
  • Participation hours may take place on or off-campus, in accordance with the syllabus and instructor for that particular term and campus.
  • Guests are not allowed.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

This class is graded [P] Pass or [NP] No Pass. No letter grades can be earned.

To receive a PASS the student must complete 70% of the maximum activity hours with attendance distributed over the entire term. This means at least 21 hours of activity time of the 30 hours per term maximum. Students are required to exercise or be active for about three hours per week. This time should include activities that improve overall health, fitness, and wellness. All workouts counted for grading purposes must be completed by Wednesday of final exam week each term.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Course Details:

  • Students should complete and submit their PE Personal Data Card to the instructor or Athletic Facilities by the first Thursday of the term.
  • Students are required to exercise or be active for about three hours per week. This time should include activities that improve overall health, fitness, and wellness. Your activity can be completed on or off campus. Students may earn a maximum of thirty hours of participation in one term and need 70% of thirty or 21 hours for a Pass grade.
  • There may be an associated D2L page for the course. Included in the D2L course information are modules about cardio/aerobic exercise, muscle fitness, stretching, back health, and lifelong wellness. Use this resource to ensure that your activity program is well-rounded, safe, and designed to meet your personal goals.
  • To monitor your progress you will be filling out an Attendance Log at Athletic Facilities OR completing an online activity checklist within the D2L OR filling out an Attendance Log on your own and emailing it to the instructor weekly. You can use a combination of the attendance log and the online checklist or either one exclusively, to keep track of your active time. You will gain the most benefit from being active each week, being truthful on your log/checklist, and using this course to motivate you to be more active.
  • Students are only able to use PE Athletic facilities on the same campus as the PE 10 course in which they are registered, unless permission is granted from another campus. At any campus students will sign in and out at PE Athletic Facilities window each time. This is so that staff know you are in the facility for safety and for tracking your active hours. You’ll need a current term facility sticker on your student ID card. You are also required to wear appropriate clothing for the facility you are using (swim suit for swimmers, athletic clothes and closed-toed athletic shoes for gyms). You can get a locker to use for the term. You’ll be required to clean out locker by FINALS WEEK and any unclaimed items will be disposed of over PCC scheduled breaks.
  • PE, Fitness, Recreation, Athletic facilities are available for use during posted recreational hours which may include: swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness/weight room, and track. Students should read and follow all rules posted in these facilities.
