Course Description

Instructs prospective music-related business owners, such as bands or private teachers, how to initiate, organize and operate a successful small business. Included are promotion, marketing, and record-keeping. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Material will be presented in a lecture/discussion format. Visual presentations and handouts will facilitate the student's basic understanding of subject material.
  2. Students will learn to apply principles of time management.
  3. Students will be able to assess their marketable skills.
  4. Students will set short and long-term goals.
  5. Students will be able to put together a marketing concept.
  6. Students will be able to construct a music industry tree.
  7. Students will be able to define independent vrs. Major record labels.
  8. Students will be able to take steps to secure copyright protection for original works.
  9. Students will be able to organize business and tax records.
  10. Students will be able to develop a press kit.

Students will be able to pursue booking engagements or market services.
Students will learn how to generate publicity.
