Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Group Piano I presents practical tools to develop basic piano skills. During class, students perform as an ensemble while following a tempo given by the instructor. Curriculum examines fundamentals of music theory, practicing habits, and various stylistic nuances. At the end of the term, students are encouraged to perform a solo piece" in the presence of the instructor.
Intended Outcomes for the course
The material in this course is presented in a lecture/lab format. Other educational methods may be employed such as discussion, dictation, and keyboard demonstrations. The student spends each class time in the piano lab. During lab activities, the instructor will observe the student's progress and answer any questions pertaining to subject matter. Students may be asked to perform specific skills.

- Student keyboard playback of workbook exercises and pieces.
- Demonstrations of assignment parameters.
- Rhythmic dictation

Outcome Assessment Strategies
Procedures used to evaluate student progress will be presented at the beginning of the course, with clarification of the instructor's expectations. Competency and grades will be determined according to the student's ability to perform assigned keyboard tasks during scheduled examinations. Written quizzes, homework assignments, creativity, participation, and regular attendance will also serve to gauge the outcome of a student's final grade.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Illustrate ability to play scales and exercises pertinent to the development of dexterity and form. Display proper fingering. Demonstrate ability to play at a steady tempo.
- Memorize notation of the grand staff. Apply written notation to proper locations on the piano keyboard.
- Identify names to common intervals and triads based on the 12 tone scale. Translate intervals to locations on the piano keyboard in various positions.
- Illustrate ability to sightread basic notation & rhythms.
- Improvise a simple 12 bar progression when following a chord chart. Incorporate boogie-woogie bass line to improvisational pattern.
- Retain and apply basic concepts pertaining to music theory: time signatures, key signatures, and circle of fifths.
- Demonstrate ability to play musical selections from a workbook.
- Develop independence of hands.
- Comprehend dynamic markings and other common symbols.
