Course Description
Planting and maintenance techniques for specific types of turf, soil preparation, selection and application of fertilizers, equipment use for mowing, thatching, aeration and edging, pest control, and budgeting for costs. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Specific fertilizer materials that are used in turf maintenance are studied as well as their application rates. Equipment used in turf maintenance for mowing, thatching, aerification, edging, overseeding and fertilizer applications are evaluated and operated. Pest control includes identification and eradication of insects, fungi, weeds and nematodes.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Become proficient in identification of cool season turf grasses and selection of grass varieties for new installations based on usage criteria.
- Learn and perform hands-on techniques for restoration and installation of turf, including soil analysis, fertilizer needs and irrigation requirements.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the operation of mechanical equipment commonly available and used in the maintenance, restoration and installation of turf.
- Learn and practice diagnostic processes using turf plots.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
This is a graded course. The basis for grades is a combination of test scores, attendance, and participation in lab exercises.
