Course Description

Introduces current standards for the establishment and management of bees. Covers bee biology and beekeeping skills through hands on experience in active bee hives. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Skillfully apply the tools, equipment, and protective gear for beekeeping.
  2. Use an understanding of bee biology to know how to feed bees at different times of the year.
  3. Work within the State and local government regulations and laws regarding beekeeping.
  4. Apply the knowledge of good sources of plant nectar and pollen to planning pollinator friendly landscapes and gardens.

  • Weekly Lectures and hands on demonstrations in the hives

  • Become familiar with the tools, equipment and protective gear for beekeeping
  • Know how to supplement and feed bees at different times of the year
  • Know the anatomy of Queens, Workers, and Drones
  • Know the life cycle of bees
  • Know how to recognize common hive diseases, and how to treat them
  • Know different options for treating mites and the benefits of each
  • Know how to raise a new queen and split a colony
  • Know how to harvest honey
  • Know the State and local regulations and laws regarding beekeeping
  • Become familiar with plants that are good sources of nectar and pollen
