Course Description

Focuses on practicing advanced simultaneous interpreting in live settings where no consumer is present. Emphasizes the development of skills necessary to qualify for an internship placement.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Apply reflective practices and feedback to further develop interpreting skills.

  2. Demonstrate entry level interpreting skills necessary for internship placement.

Course Activities and Design

This course will consist of the following activities:

  • Regular individual sessions with instructor

  • Interpreting ongoing assignments in a college classroom

  • Preparing for interpreting assignments

  • Ongoing self assessment of language and interpreting skills

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed by interpreting work, completion of hours, reflections, professionalism, and demeanor. Students must complete 90 hours of class time, interpreting assignments, mentoring, and community hours.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Course content includes:

  • Continued development of expressive and receptive simultaneous interpreting skills.

  • Use of appropriate professional dress and demeanor, interpreting techniques, preparation, processing, clarification techniques, and production of an interpretation.

  • Discussing and analyzing personal skill development
