Course Description

Provides an opportunity to gain practical experience working under the supervision of onsite mentors in an agency that serves deaf people. Requires: fifth term standing in the Sign Language Interpretation Program or Deaf Studies Program and completion of a Deaf Studies Internship Plan.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate in ASL and work effectively in a range of organizational frameworks engaged in service, advocacy, and social change.
  • Demonstrate effective personal involvement in community issues and public policy.
  • Develop interpersonal, organizational and political skill to advance individual and collective interest.
  • Apply the RID Code of Professional Conduct in terms of confidentiality and impartiality.
  • Behave in a professional manner in interactions with all clients.
  • Track and calculate hours.
  • Meet the outcomes mutually agreed upon by student and instructor (supervisor) for the internship. 

Course Activities and Design

 Students will begin by observing activities at the placement site. During the second week of placement they will meet with their mentors to determine appropriate tasks for them. 

Beginning with the third week of placement interns will, with the permission of their mentors and Deaf consumers, gradually begin to take over these tasks until they can function independently in the setting.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

On-site evaluation by internship instructor. At least one Deaf and one hearing evaluator should be used. Weekly journals and written assignments will also be evaluated, although onsite evaluations will constitute the primary means of assessment. Students must earn a total of 90 hours to receive credit for the course.

  • Track and calculate hours.
  • Analyze the workforce setting and the people involved to determine the best sight line for communication and to determine where to sit or stand.

  • Develop a data spreadsheet and track required hours and submit it.
  • Analyze the work environment setting to evaluate the logistics and angles and determine the best place to stand or sit to support the best visual language (ASL) communication available in the workplace.

Communication
Hours: 40

  • Work as a member of a workforce by analyzing group and organizational processes, and learning how to work effectively in diverse contexts.
  • Determine clients’ language use and develop active listening and communication skills.

  • Communication with a diverse audience. 
  • Use professionalism throughout all communication with clients.
  • Complete self-assessment reports
  • Self-reflection on experiences through weekly journal entries and other assignments.

Human Relations
Hours: 40

  • Work as a member of the Deaf community in a range of organizations with a goal to support and engage in service and advocacy.
  • Apply the RID Code of Professional Conduct in terms of confidentiality and impartiality.
  • Behave in a professional manner.
  • Meet the outcomes mutually agreed upon by student and instructor (supervisor) for the internship. 

  • Direct use of ASL to communicate with a diverse audience in the workplace.
  • Apply professionalism during interactions with all individuals and groups.
  • Develop skill in practicing confidentiality and impartiality. 
  • Self-reflection on experiences through weekly journal entries and other assignments.
