Course Description

Focuses on advanced ASL syntax, interactive interpretation and analysis of message equivalency in ASL. Explores a wide range of topics incorporating the ASL skills in one's interpreting work. Builds upon information and skills learned in ITP 276.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Use research and prediction skills to prepare for interpreting a message.
  • Demonstrate proficiency by interpreting at least the main points of the source message into complete and grammatically correct sentences with appropriate prosody.
  • Discuss semantic features of signs and use of space in ASL that are appropriate for the various topics.
  • Analyze and practice advanced ASL syntax structure within the context of English to ASL interpretation.

Course Activities and Design

Activities include use of prediction skills, discussion of various topics, research of the topics before interpreting the message, peer feedback, instructor feedback, readings, and interpreting activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Homework assignments, research, and evaluation on interpreting skill.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

This course introduces the interpretion of various topics with a Deaf perspective from a Deaf instructor and focuses on:

  • Researching various topics beforehand in order to prepare to interpret the message
  • Technical skill and the importance of prediction before interpreting the message
  • The main points will be interpreted with at least 70 percent or more accuracy
  • The necessity of cohesiveness, appropriate pauses, and complete sentence structure to produce a successful interpretation
  • Effective use of space, semantics, structures, and more in ASL
