Course Description

Explores interpreting in educational settings. Focuses on simultaneous ASL to English and English to ASL interpreting skills and introduces transliteration skills. Focuses on individual areas of needed skill development.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the differences in interpreting and transliterating.
  • Given a source language message, produce an accurate and equivalent simultaneous interpretation or transliteration of the main ideas and most supporting details of the original message.
  • Demonstrate an ability to interpret or transliterate in educational settings based on the specific language preferences of the Deaf consumer.

Course Activities and Design

Students will perform simultaneous interpretations and transliterations on topics common to academic settings. Students will discuss and demonstrate best practices for educational interpreting. Students will continue to practice concentration, anticipation, prediction, use of prior knowledge and knowledge and new information, and memory techniques. Students will continue to demonstrate self-assessment and peer-review techniques to further identify patterns in their own skill development.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be evaluated through formal evaluations of ASL-to-English simultaneous interpretations/transliterations and English-to-ASL simultaneous interpretations/transliterations. Students will be expected to complete self-assessments of their own work.

Given a source language message, produce an interpretation of all the main ideas and some supporting details of the message. The interpretation must meet the following criteria:

  • Each sentence must be complete and grammatically correct.
  • Each sentence must be equivalent to the presenter's message.
  • All sentences must be congruent in light of the presenter's intent and the message as a whole. (Gish, S. (1993) Practice Guidelines, used by permission)

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Simultaneous interpretation in educational settings.
  • Transliteration in educational settings.
  • Best practices in K-12 and other educational settings.
  • Analysis of context, purpose, and register of both English and ASL discourse in the field of education.

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Given a specific setting and a source language message, produce a simultaneous interpretation of all the main ideas and some supporting details of the message.

Students will learn how to quantify the accuracy of their interpretation. Students will calculate the percentage of their accuracy in their interpretations of main and supporting points. Students will use their scores to detect patterns in their processing skills.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the differences in interpreting and transliterating.
  • Given a source language message, produce an accurate and equivalent simultaneous interpretation or transliteration of the main ideas and most supporting details of the original message.
  • Demonstrate an ability to interpret or transliterate in educational settings based on the specific language preferences of the Deaf consumer.

  • Preparation and submit a written self-analysis of their interpretation/transliteration and their skill development weekly.
  • Develop skills necessary to work in teams during an interpretation/transliteration
  • Practice pre-conferencing to negotiate team strategies,
  • Practice communicating and supporting during an interpretation,
  • Practice debriefing in a professional, respectful manner.
