Course Description

Explores sign language acquisition, bilingualism, language variations, and language attitudes. Presents current research relating to the field.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe sign language acquisition, bilingualism, sign systems, language variations, and language attitudes.

  2. Discuss current research in the field of sign language linguistics.

  3. Conduct and present research related to sociolinguistics in the Deaf community.

Course Activities and Design

Activities include readings, lectures, discussion, small group activities, and research.

Students will be assessed on assignments, activities, research, and exams.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

The course content includes:

  • Terminology used by linguists

  • Research in the field of sign language linguistics

  • Language acquisition, modality, bilingualism, sign systems, variations, language attitudes, and language policy and planning.
