Course Description

Introduces ASL phonology, morphology, syntax, prosody, and nonmanual grammar. Explores current research relating to the field.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe ASL phonology, morphology, syntax, and prosody.

  2. Discuss current research in the field of sign language linguistics.

  3. Conduct and present research related to current language use in the Deaf community.

Course Activities and Design

Activities include readings, lectures, discussion, small group activities, and research.

Students will be assessed on assignments, activities, research, and exams.

The course content includes:

  • Terminology used by linguists
  • Current research in the field of sign language linguistics
  • Phonology, morphology, syntax, prosody, and non-manual grammar
