Course Description

Analyzes and compares ASL and English discourse. Explores relevant research and introduces the research process.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify cultural strategies for identity construction, pragmatics, and politeness in ASL and English.

  2. Analyze discourse markers, discourse mapping, coherence, and cohesion in ASL and English discourse. 

  3. Discuss relevant research in ASL and English.

  4. Conduct research demonstrating meta-linguistic awareness of personal discourse patterns.

Course Activities and Design

This course will include lectures, student presentations, a research project, and group discussions.

Students will be assessed on assignments, quizzes, discussions, and projects.

Course content includes:

  • Analysis of context, purpose, structure, and register of English and ASL discourse

  • Discourse mapping of English and ASL

  • Research related discussions and activities
