Course Description

Presents advanced ASL and culturally appropriate communication in Deaf communities. Covers advanced grammatical features, non-manual markers, language skill development, register, and discourse features in ASL.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf communities.

  2. Describe the impact of Deaf cultures on intercultural communications.

  3. Produce grammatically and culturally correct ASL, including appropriate production, syntax, prosody, non-manual markers, depiction, discourse markers, transitions, and use of space.

  4. Interact with Deaf and DeafBlind communities in a culturally appropriate manner.

Course Activities and Design

This course will include live and recorded demonstrations, lectures, small group discussions, student presentations, ASL translations, and other hands-on activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Assessment strategies include observation of students' in-class receptive and expressive skill in ASL, quizzes on receptive skill and knowledge of grammatical features, and recordings of students' expressive skill and ASL translations.

Includes all or most of the following:

  • Various topics and current issues will be discussed and analyzed, focusing on appropriate use of depiction and space
  • Formal and frozen register such as  the pledge of allegiance, and national anthem, and in academic settings and formal proceedings
  • Application of grammatical features and non-manual markers will be analyzed and discussed
  • Techniques for giving feedback in a professional and supportive manner
