Course Description

Introduces therapeutic models and skills, task analysis of treatment issues, medical terminology, goal setting, activity planning, assessment, documentation and evaluation, and safety as applied in a therapeutic horticulture milieu. Covers professional and therapeutic topics including learning styles, motivational management, group dynamics, therapeutic use of self, counseling basics, roles within an interdisciplinary team, the leadership role of the therapist, professional ethics, and writing, listening and communication skills. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is the third course of a 6 course, 14-credit sequence in therapeutic horticulture required by Therapeutic Horticulture Activity Specialist Certificate of Completion. Audit Available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Conduct treatment plans, therapeutic sessions, assessment, and documentation appropriate to elders, children, and special populations.
  • Design and conduct therapeutic horticultural activities in therapeutic settings and facilities, using therapeutic clinical skills based on professional standards of the field.

Course Activities and Design

Course is conducted as a hybrid, including contact with the therapeutic horticulture programs and therapeutic gardens. Includes a combination of reading, lecture, discussion, observation and practice in the program and garden. Focuses on the assessment and documentation process, identifying tools and addressing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial client goals. Explores treatment issues of special populations, task analysis of therapeutic horticulture activities, and writing session plans for elders and children. Explores outcome and evaluation of therapeutic horticulture activity sessions.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes through various means, including assessment, documentation, task analysis, session plans, and case studies; written and oral examination; and group and individual projects including healthcare site work. Students will be able to evaluate sessions and participant experience with proper techniques.
