Course Description

Introduces guardianship in Oregon. Includes a review of the court process, who qualifies for guardianship, and responsibilities of individuals serving as guardians. Presents basic information about how to be a guardian for a family member, and an overview of resources for guardians. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Suitable for family members considering guardianship of a parent or an adult child, as well as gerontologists, social workers and caregivers seeking basic information about guardianship in Oregon.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Successful students completing this course will be able to:
1. Make informed decisions about obtaining guardianship for an incapacitated adult in Oregon.
2. Assume the basic responsibilities that guardians have for protected persons, while understanding attorney, court and facility expectations of guardians.
3. Serve as a guardian for a family member in Oregon.
4. Access and work with basic care resources for protected persons.
5. Work effectively in a care context as a guardian under Oregon regulations, and handle any identified problems with an existing guardianship.

Course Activities and Design

Students will observe a variety of media and on-line content concerning the guardianship process, laws, and practice standards related to guardianship
of an individual in Oregon. Included will be court expectations, the service system in Oregon for adults and seniors, what an attorney wants you to
know and do, and working with the protected person and others to get the best care possible within the identified protected person’s values.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

1. Multiple choice quizzes (on-line)
2. Short essay responses to questions about specific issues (on-line).
3. A final summary quiz about basic required concepts.
