Course Description

Emphasizes safe working environments targeting people who have compliance and training responsibilities. Covers how to establish employee protection programs and to inform and train employees properly. Includes intro to OSHA, general safety and health provision, Hazcom, health hazards in construction, stairways and ladders, motor vehicles, materials handling, hand and power tools, scaffolding, fire protection, excavations, confined space entry, fall protection, personal protective and lifesaving equipment and electrical safety. Awards a 30 hour OSHA safety card upon successful completion of course. This class can be used towards Continuing Education Units for Oregon State electrical licensing purposes. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

At the conclusion of the class, the student should have the information and knowledge required to be certified in 30-hour Construction Occupational Safety and Health Training. Students must attend 30 hours of classroom time and pass final exam to receive completion card.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • The student will demonstrate knowledge of OSHA standards and General Duty Clauses.
  • Student will demonstrate a basic understanding of general safety & health provisions.
  • Student will identify health hazards in construction.
  • Student will demonstrate the basics of fall protection and prevention.
  • Student will demonstrate electrical safety including lockout/tagout and protective grounding equipment.
  • Student will demonstrate overhead protection, identify signs, signals and barricades.
  • The student will demonstrate proper material handling, rigging, storage, use and disposal of.

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented by means of lectures and homework utilizing the course book Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry. The course will include demonstration/hands on, discussions and videos.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail methods to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a final grade. The grading policy is letter grades, unless Pass - No/Pass or Audit is specifically requested.
