Upon successful completion students should be able to:

1. Apply and practice beginning professional, ethical, and legal knowledge and behavior.
2. Demonstrate beginning customer service and communication skills in ways that respect
communication styles and differences and show sensitivity in regard to individuals' cultural, social, cognitive, and emotional differences.
3. Apply and use beginning access services, technical services, and reference services knowledge and skills to serve library and patrons’ needs.

Students' progress will be evaluated and criteria for assigning a course grade by the following tools: daily journal, two written evaluations from the supervising teacher and two observations written up by the PCC supervisor.

Students will:

Professional and ethical skills:

• Identify and put into practice teacher's instructional assistant's and student's roles and rights.
• Identify and put into practice knowledge of confidentiality.
• Report any incident or suspected incident of child abuse to the proper authority.

Interpersonal and communication skills:

• Use skills to resolve conflict.
• Cooperate to facilitate team effort.
• Use effective non-verbal, oral and written communication skills.
• Maintain good working and team relations.
• Receive, interpret and utilize feedback.
• Model and practice listening, observation and reporting skills.
• Practice strategies for dealing with personal/career stress.
• Organize and prioritize policies, procedures and performance expectations required in the classroom and school setting.

Employability skills:

• Practice dependability, punctuality and responsibility in regards to absences and tardiness.
• Identify and practice good work habits.
• Responds and makes appropriate adjustments to suggestions from employer, supervisor, or other persons.
• Demonstrates organizational skills.
• Dresses in a manner that fits the job guideline for dress.
• Identifies good health habits and is healthy

Knowledge of teaching techniques:

• Modify and develop teaching techniques to use with students under the guidance of the teacher.
• Use various teaching techniques and tools in the classroom.
• Identify and make adjustments for different learning styles.
• Use appropriate communication levels for the students (age appropriate, sign language, etc.).

Managing behaviors in the classroom:

• Establish and maintain desirable student behavior.
• Practice positive behavior techniques.
• Practice positive motivating techniques.
• Assist students in monitoring their own behavior.
• Assist students to become responsible for their behavior, work, and play, as in, self-determination.
• Observe and report critical incidences.
• Describe and demonstrate techniques for promoting a positive learning environment.

COMMUNICATION: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to communicate effectively by determining the purpose of communication; analyzing audience and context to sue appropriate language and modality; and by responding to feedback to achieve clarity, coherence, and effectiveness.

COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to apply scientific, cultural, and political perspectives in understanding the natural and social world and in addressing the consequences of human activity both globally and locally, demonstrating an understanding of social change and social action.

CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to think critically and creatively to solve problems, understanding and using various methods of reasoning and evaluating information and it sources.

CULTURE AWARENESS: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the varieties of human cultures, perspectives, and forms of expressions as well as their own culture's complexities.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE: Graduates of Portland Community College should demonstrate mastery in a discipline of profession at a level appropriate to program and transfer requirements through the application of concepts, skills, processes, and technology in the performance of authentic tasks that enhance community involvement and employability.

SELF-REFLECTION: Graduates of Portland Community College should be self-appraising in applying the knowledge and skills they have learned, examining and evaluating personal beliefs and comparing them with the beliefs of others.
