Course Description

Introduces structure, functions, and procedures in libraries. Provides a base on which to build specific skills needed for employment in libraries. Covers knowledge and use of the Dewey Decimal System, electronic card catalog/circulation systems, procedures for processing, and maintaining collections, basic terminology and policies. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. List different types of libraries and compare and contrast the structure and functions of those libraries.
  2. Identify components of books, video, and other media formats and write a bibliography in correct format, i.e. MLA, APA
  3. Recite the main 10 Dewey Decimal categories by number and subject;
  4. Organize call numbers correctly using both Dewey and Library of Congress classification designations; understand the assignment of specific Dewey numbers.
  5. Demonstrate the use of electronic card catalogs
  6. Perform basic internet and electronic database searches.
  7. Understand the basic organization of MARC records and procedures used in cataloging.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to execute basic procedures to process and maintain materials.
  9. Describe the essential elements of circulation procedures and policies
  10. Be aware of copyright law as it applies to libraries and their patrons

Course Activities and Design

The materials in this course will be presented in a lecture format with opportunities to observe and practice procedures including experiences with electronic card catalogs, circulation systems and search engines. When possible, field trips will be arranged to observe and compare libraries. Various educational techniques will be used depending upon the size of the class, student background and instructional materials available.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and criteria for assigning a course grade. Methods may include one or more of the following: attendance, class participation, examinations, library visitation reports, completion of basic search workshops.
