Course Description

Explores pain management, fear, and anxiety associated with dental treatment. Covers the neurosphysiology and pharmacology related to the administration of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation. Explores the prevention, recognition and management of local and systemic complications from the administration of local anesthesia including legal considerations.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Assess a patient's medical history, contraindications, and potential drug interactions.
  2. Review fundamentals of local anesthesia injection techniques and nitrous oxide sedation.
  3. Calculate maximum recommended doses of local anesthetic agents.
  4. Explain pharmacodynamics of local anesthetic agents.
  5. Develop individualized pain management plans.
  6. Recognize the ethical and legal aspects of administering anesthesia and sedation in dental hygiene practice.
