Course Description

Laboratory training and experience in basic dental assisting functions and responsibilities. Students progress to assisting dentists in the dental clinics.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is limited to those accepted into the PCC Dental Assisting Program.  Included in DA 111 will be prevention of disease transmission, sterilization and disinfection techniques, safety factors, dental health patient education, instrument identification, chairside assisting of basic dental procedures, introduction to rubber dam placement and removal, documentation of patient information and treatment using HIPAA protocol, and alginate impressions.  DA 111 is structured to integrate with DA 110

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Perform basic chairside duties utilizing safe methods and demonstrating professionalism in the PCC Dental Clinic setting.
  • Describe and discuss PCC DA Clinic policies and standards and their purpose related to the professions of dentistry.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Attend clinic lab sessions
  • Complete  written skill tests @80% accuracy
  • Complete skill tests @ 80% accuracy
  • Complete Activity worksheets.
  • Complete clinical evaluations @ 85% (exam, chairside operative, auxiliary, clinic monitor)
  • Complete Practice Chart Assignment

All outcome assessment strategies must be completed to receive a grade. If not, a grade of “I” (incomplete) will be given and the student must meet with the instructor to determine if a grade change is optional.

Competencies and skills:
  • Follow OSHA Universal Standards and Hazardous Material Guidelines prior to, during, and after, providing dental care on a patient.
  • Assess current health of patient using health history information, taking and recording vital signs, and using observation skills.
  • Accurately record existing dental conditions, treatment plans and treatment rendered.
  • Work collaboratively as a dental team member.
  • Demonstrate preparation and delivery of dental procedure armamentarium.
  • Utilize ergonomically correct positioning during treatment procedure.
  • Practice patient management through the use of inquiry and listening communication skills.
  • Demonstrate four-handed dental assisting skills.
  • Explain basic dental restoration procedures to patient.
  • Manage time efficiently.

Outcomes:•Perform basic chairside duties utilizing safe methods and demonstrating professionalism in the PCC Dental Clinic setting.Activities:Calculate correct pulse and respiration readings on patients. Measure and mix solutions for use in dental clinic.

Outcomes:•Perform basic chairside duties utilizing safe methods and demonstrating professionalism in the PCC Dental Clinic setting.•Describe and discuss PCC DA Clinic policies and standards and their purpose related to the professions of dentistry.Activities:Direct instruction on communicating with patients and health professionals through the use of inquiry and listening skills.Students provide instructions for patients in the area of oral health care; review patient health history and clinic policy with patient; write patient information in dental chart. Students also document dental conditions from the patient oral cavity 10 times during the term.

Outcomes: •Perform basic chairside duties utilizing safe methods and demonstrating professionalism in the PCC Dental Clinic setting.•Describe and discuss PCC DA Clinic policies and standards and their purpose related to the professions of dentistry.Activities: Direct instruction in describing the dental team and the importance of working as a collaborative team member. Direct instruction on patient management in the clinical setting.Demonstrate the ability to work as a dental team member and provide patient management skills in the clinical setting.
