Course Description
Introduces Community Corrections or probation and parole in the management of offender behavior. Discusses Management of Community Corrections agencies and community intervention with offenders. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
This course will provide a broad overview of probation and post prison supervision case management practices. The importance of offender supervision in our community and how that relates to the Criminal Justice System will be explored. This class will discover challenges to supervision facing our future. Specialties of the profession will also be covered such as pre-sentence investigative writing, sex offender supervision, domestic violence supervision, gang supervision and others.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Demonstrate an understanding of relationships of agencies in the Criminal Justice System by discussing the roles that each plan in conjunction with the others.
- List differing judicial views on sentencing.
- Evaluate the codes of ethics and values needed for this field as they relate to specific career choices.
- Identify the duties and tools of Probation and Parole Officers.
- Share job opportunities and techniques of obtaining employment in this field.
- Distinguish among various types of supervision and governing authorities.
- Identify and describe the relationships between the courts and the Parole and Probation Officers.

- General knowledge of Oregon’s Criminal Justice System.
- Expectations of conduct for officers on and off duty.
- Supervising officer’s ability to balance community protection and rehabilitation of the offender.
- Common case management techniques and tools.
- Performance measures for supervision of offenders in the community.
- Specialties in the field of probation/parole.
