Course Description

Introduces a multi-disciplinary approach to cultivating and sustaining resiliency knowledge and skills to enhance personal well being and peak performance as a first responder. Covers issues related to public safety culture, leadership and management, ethics, personality, emotional and social intelligence, emotion regulation, preventative mental health, mindfulness, physical fitness, nutrition and cognitive fitness. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Examines situations, issues and broad problems facing police, fire and emergency telecommunications professions ranging from traditional best practices and approaches to leadership, management and training of personnel, and human sustainability on the job.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Identify, analyze and manage public safety operations and critical incidents through knowledge and skill improvement in collaborative leadership, emotional and social intelligence, stress response, human and organizational resiliency, and community building.
  2. Reduce and mediate the impact of conscious and unconscious bias through enhanced awareness discipline and greater understanding of the complexity of factors affecting implicit bias and how bias impacts organizational culture and community building.
  3. Enhance quality public safety service by addressing institutional challenges with the latest approaches and practices for improved officer performance, enhanced public relations and reduced citizen complaints.
  4. Practice contemporary holistic leadership skills, internally and externally, that aid in more effective incident response, to include reducing potential liabilities through improved cognitive fitness and decision making, and maximize potential for successful resolutions in dynamic and rapidly evolving encounters.
  5. Improve individual resiliency through development of a personalized plan with an understanding of complex, intrinsic and extrinsic variables that contribute to occupational stress in the public safety industry.
  6. Nurture and sustain greater efficacy in leading self, leading others and managing organizations as it relates to resiliency in a high reliability organization.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Methods of assessment may include the following: examinations, quizzes, an assignment, research papers, class participation, role playing feedback, oral presentations and group activities.
