Course Description

Introduces Chinese language and culture. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written, and spoken Chinese. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, syllable structure, vocabulary, a limited number of Chinese characters (hanzi) and grammar. For beginners. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and recognize some words, phrases, and simple sentences that are written in Chinese.
  2. Write words, phrases, and simple sentences about a limited number of familiar topics.
  3. Speak about a limited number of familiar topics using practiced or memorized words and phrases.
  4. Listen and recognize familiar and memorized words in spoken Chinese.
  5. Recognize some basic Chinese cultural products and practices related to everyday life.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual or group presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies. 

  • Quizzes on pinyin and Chinese characters (hanzi).

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Introduction to pinyin (spelling system), character structures and basic sentence structure.

  • Greetings,  introductions and nationality

  • Date, time, telephone numbers, age, birthday

  • Describing a photo of people: Family, members, common processions

  • Interrogatives

  • Personal pronouns and demonstrative pronouns

  • Daily activities, hobbies, likes and dislikes.

  • Formulates simple questions and answers.
