Course Description

Examines ecological relationships between human societies and their natural environments. Clarifies the human's biological relatedness to the world's natural ecosystems and then presents a look at the ensuing disruptions in nature and in human cultures. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

The course surveys the history of ecological theory and examines human relationship to our environment; it reviews the many natural environmental types to better understand the variety of human adaptations.  As ecology and economy are closely related, the variety of subsistence types will also be presented and examined.  The course will serve as an introduction to the Anthropological sub-field of Culture Ecology.  Students should minimally read and write at the college level.

Intended Outcomes for the course

1.  Examine basic concepts in cultural ecology.

2. Identify the impact of the environment on human cultural systems.

Social Inquiry and Analysis

Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.
