Course Description

Introduces design process and drawing for residential design focusing on design of a new single family residence. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is a required for an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Architectural Design and Drafting and in Interior Design.

Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer.

Students must be capable of reading and communicating in the English language and may be required to pass a listening competency test administered by the department.  Students who may have a disability and wish an accommodation should make arrangements to meet with the instructor outside of class to discuss specific requests.  Any request for accommodation may require that documentation of disability be reviewed by the Office for Students with Disabilities

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Develop a comprehensive program based on site analysis and client interview for a new single family residence and produce schematic design drawings to communicate solutions.
  • Communicate with design professionals, clients and engineers using industry specific terminology and graphics.

Course Activities and Design

Course materials will be presented in a lecture and discussion format, using multimedia, demonstration, videos, and diagrams, which provide examples of building and site analysis, the design process, appropriate design solutions (built and student work), and model building and rendering techniques.  The lecture/discussion will be followed by lab, where students will make application of concepts through a residential design term project.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student to demonstrate understanding of zoning and code requirements, site analysis, and design process, and apply these into the design of a residential building.  The design should demonstrate response to the site and program, and show consideration for use of building materials on the exterior and human activities within room layouts and adjacencies within the interior.

Student to finalize project using professional quality presentation skills.

Student to demonstrate time management skills by completion of projects by assigned deadlines and by meeting specific objectives for each phase of project

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Assignment #1:  Zoning, Codes, Design Concept, Site Analysis

  1. Fill in Zoning Review Sheet (in this packet)
  2. Fill in Building Code info (in this packet)
  3. Write a paragraph describing your initial ideas for the term project.

SITE ANALYSIS

1.  Purpose:  To record conditions on the site (lot) that influence location of house on site, and layout of rooms, windows and doors within the house.

Draw:  One site analysis, and include: ………..

Assignment #2

A.  Block Diagram:

Purpose:  To illustrate spatial relationships and adjacencies; approximately to scale

Format:   8 1/2”  X  11” trace or graph paper; approx 1/8” scale, freehand

Content:  Use information from Site Analysis project to guide spatial relationships

Sketch:      TWO different plan arrangements; using pencil or sketch pens

B.  Sketch Floor Plans:  (15 points)

Purpose:    A “trial run” of a design floor plan, using one of the diagrams above

         Format:     8 1/2” X 11” or 11” X 17” paper

Scale:  1/8” (if you sketch, it’s OK to be slightly loose on lines)

Content:   Use information from Site Analysis; see examples in packet
