Course Description

Provides an in-depth exploration of the theory and practice of professional addiction counseling. Covers theoretical underpinnings of addiction counseling and the various treatment modalities used in the profession. Emphasizes developing practical counseling skills for working with clients. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the theoretical foundations of counseling with emphasis on addiction and human behavior.

  2. Analyze the counseling relationship through culturally-responsive and trauma-informed frameworks.

  3. Recognize techniques derived from theoretical foundations specific to the levels of addiction treatment.

  4. Evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of applied counseling techniques through research.
