Course Description
Covers the knowledge and skills needed to plan individual treatment and manage client records. Includes all aspects of client record management including federal and state regulations and American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement criteria. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Create and maintain individualized client-centered records that meet clinical, legal, and regulatory criteria.

Follow state and federal guidelines regarding required procedures for documentation and client continuum of care for the client receiving addiction counseling services.
Course Activities and Design
- The "golden thread" of clinical continuity will be introduced that encompasses the process from intake to discharge.
- Creating appropriate, targeted responses using clinical language via creation of a 'client' case file.
- Clinical scenarios will be presented that require students to apply ASAM criteria.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
- Written examinations will determine comprehension of factual data.
- Complete intake summary, treatment place, progress notes, discharge summary, urinalysis protocol, informed consent and confidentiality form.
