Course Description

Presents an overview of Addiction Recovery Mentor skills, resources and evidence-based practices that have been demonstrated to contribute to successful Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Recovery Peer Mentor programs. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Eligibility: Any PCC student may take this course. However in order to later apply
for a substance addiction recovery peer mentor certification, one must be in
substance recovery for a minimum of two years.

This course is a preparation course introducing students to the professional field
of substance addiction recovery mentoring. It meets the criteria for the
educational requirement for applications to become a Peer Support Specialist-AD
and / or a Certified Recovery Mentor.

The curriculum is approved by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and by the Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Board of Oregon (MHACBO). This course is a preparatory course, introducing students to the professional field of substance addiction recovery mentoring.

This course meets the criteria for theeducational requirement for applications to become a Peer Support Specialist-AD and / or a Certified Recovery Mentor.

NOTE: This curriculum is approved by OHA the Oregon Health Authority and by MHACBO the Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Board of Oregon.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Provide culturally appropriate and trauma-informed mentor services to individuals in the process of recovery from a Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
  2. Use a person-centered approach to create a partner relationship with people in SUD recovery.
  3. Formulate strength-based recovery plans with the identified client.
  4. Meet the educational requirements as specified by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and the Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO) that will allow the student to apply for the PSS-AD Peer Support Specialist – Adult Addictions and the CRM Certified Peer Recovery Mentor.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. An assessment process that will extract information from lectures, readings and other multimedia presentations via a test of a basic understanding of the targeted concepts.
  2. A project that requires the student to synthesize the course material into appropriate Wellness Recovery Action planning for their own professional peer self-care and with their future client peers.
