In addition to her luminous images of the natural world, Joan Gentry has also made extensive studies of the Modern architecture of Los Angeles. This photograph shows the stone arch and 90-foot vaulted, etched glass dome at the east portal of the Los Angeles Gateway Center (designed by McLarand Vasquez Emsiek & Partners and completed in 1995), a massive transit hub for pedestrians, designed to evoke the railway stations of the past. Gentry discovers the same grandly elegant forms and delicate light in this architecture that she finds in nature.
