"Rope" suggests the illustrative regionalism in American art of the Great Depression. A dual interest in realistic texture and abstract shape underlies this work: the sensuous attention to the highly rendered textures of weathered wood, cloth, flesh and hemp are scaffolded by repeated diamonds and coiled or slack curves. The underlying structure reflects the artist's belief that the languages of realism and of abstraction are utterly compatible. The subject also reflects with Hall's thematic celebration of Oregon industries (fishing).
