Study environment

When creating a study environment, consider the conditions that help you stay focused and productive. Some students prefer a quiet space, such as a library or office, while others work best with background noise, like in a coffee shop. Ultimately, the most effective study environment is one that supports your concentration and helps you complete your tasks.

Create an effective study space

  • Select a designated spot to study, it doesn’t have to be a large space. A dedicated spot can help increase focus, maintain organization, and create a boundary between your academic life and personal life.1
  • Have all the items you need to study. If your dedicated space serves other purposes (such as a kitchen table), then add all of your items into a bin/box that you can easily grab and set up. Examples of items include pens/pencils, notebook paper, mouse, keyboard, charging cable, etc.3
  • Make your space comfortable. You want it comfortable enough to be able to study, but not so comfortable that you want to relax or take a nap. For example, is your chair hard? Maybe a pillow behind your back could help soften it and provide some support.2

Reduce distractions

  • Take a moment and reflect on what distracts you. Is it your phone? Is it TV? How about music? Do family and friends distract you? How about a pet? Social media?
  • Whatever you identify as distractions, develop a plan to reduce or eliminate them. For example, if your dog distracts you, consider taking them for a walk before you begin studying, or give them a special toy that they only get during study sessions. A quick internet search tailored to your specific distractions can also yield useful strategies for minimizing them.

Develop a study routine

  • A study routine is something you do every time before you begin studying.
  • Over time, this can help your brain transition from your previous task and get into a studying headspace.1
  • Keep it simple and portable so you can do it in different spaces outside of your home.3
  • An example of a study routine: Set out the school supplies you need, stretch, take a few deep breaths, and drink some water/eat a snack.
