Backwards calendar
What is it?
Backwards calendaring is a time management strategy to help break down a project into smaller parts. It helps you stay on track by creating clear milestones for you to complete.¹
How does it work?
Break up your project into smaller tasks to make it easier to complete the project. Each task should be achievable and realistic. Once you have your tasks, start by looking at the final due date for your project. From there, add due dates for each task in reverse chronological order, making sure you have adequate time for each task.¹
Tips to make a backwards calendar work:
- Be realistic – make sure you are giving yourself enough time to complete each task of your project.
- Be flexible – you may need to adjust your deadlines because of other commitments or unforeseen circumstances.¹

- Ask your instructor any questions you have.
- Start researching your sources.
- Complete the research and review your sources.

- Complete writing and work on your first revisions.
- Use the Writing Center to refine your paper and complete final revisions.
- Turn in your essay.
STEP 2: Input your tasks into your calendar to create milestones to stay on track.
- Start with the essay due date, then go in reverse chronological order to assign a date it should be completed.
- Ensure that you are giving yourself enough time to complete each project.
