Nature and Scope of Work

Under the technical direction of one or more members of the faculty or an instructional administrator, provides assistance to students involved in various laboratory settings designed to further their knowledge in a specific discipline; work situations require consideration and interpretation of circumstances or information to choose the most effective response; solutions may be somewhat technical yet are relatively straightforward and well defined once problems are understood; well developed verbal skills are required to present and exchange technical or complex information; contacts are normally within the immediate work group; work is performed relatively independently as the incumbent participates in the final instructional product and services provided in the department. Normally required to provide work direction to work study or student helpers and coordinate their activities.

Principal Accountabilities (includes some or all of the following)

  1. Works with students individually or in groups to enhance their learning; provides direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction; orients students to the laboratory. Sets up established laboratory experiences for students as required by course outline or faculty direction; may assist the instructor in the classroom/laboratory; may actually perform more dangerous and/or complex procedures for students.
  2. Acquires, maintains and inventories equipment, materials, supplies, live specimens and written materials required for student instructional needs; performs repairs on equipment; checks out tools, equipment, supplies, materials to students; maintains contact with appropriate vendors.
  3. Over the telephone or in person provides students, staff, instructors and public with information relating to specific programs; may take messages for students or instructors who are working in the area; may copy materials for distribution for students.
  4. Maintains records of activities undertaken in support of the laboratory which may include typing forms, inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding the acquisition, maintenance and distribution of tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and/or written materials.
  5. Provides for the general cleanliness and security of the laboratory or work area; disposes of hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal; assists in providing for a safe environment for the conduct of the laboratory. Reports maintenance problems as they occur.
  6. May oversee the work of student helpers; coordinate their activities in support of the instructional goals; train them in appropriate technical aspects of their work; may keep records for pay purposes.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work pressure, disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills. Working conditions may be somewhat disagreeable requiring occasional exposure to safety hazards, noise and temperature.

Physical Requirements

Some learned physical skills are required. Physical effort such as frequent standing, walking and lifting; guiding and/or carrying of lightweight materials or equipment; occasional periods of sustained effort.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline appropriate to the instructional support. One year of experience supporting laboratory activities in the technical area is required; experience performing the duties described above may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Must have proven communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform.
