Nature and Scope of Work

Under the direction of Library management, provides a wide range of technical assistance and problem solving in the operation and maintenance of the Library systems. Incumbent coordinates all aspects of traditional and digital reserve services, maintains the Library Internet and Intranet web pages and assists with a variety of digital initiative projects including electronic resource management.  Interpersonal contacts include library management and staff, faculty, students, public users and vendors as well as library staff of other academic institutions.

Job requires well-developed oral and written communication skills to present and exchange technical information. Incumbent is responsible for performing work that requires advanced job skills and for responding to work situations with minimum guidance or direction. Responsible for training and guiding others and/or reviewing their work.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Coordinates all aspects of traditional and digital reserves systems and serves as primary resource for all campus libraries. Trains staff in policies and procedures, authoring content and designing web pages, creating statistical and end of term reports, and monitoring the accuracy of records in the library database. Provides support to PCC faculty, staff and students who are encountering difficulty accessing reserves.
  2. Networks, researches, develops and implements effective ways to utilize and expand traditional and digital reserve services. Tests and evaluates new scanning, digital images and media streaming software and hardware. Searches and provides direct links from e-reserves to library online licensed databases.
  3. In coordination with the Library management, participates in formulating departmental service goals and policies for traditional and digital reserves. Maintains traditional and digital reserves policies and procedures documents. Assists with the management and production of digital resources as requested. Publishes web statistics and reports on e-reserve usage for library planning and instructor feedback.
  4. Leads and trains library reserve staff in the processing of traditional and digital reserves. Trains and supervises students who are assisting with the preparation and digitizing of digital reserve materials and reviews their work for quality and accuracy. In collaboration with Library management develops, organizes, delivers and maintains the content of the Library internet and intranet web pages. Proofs, troubleshoots, tests and publishes web-based content, delivery options and usability testing. Ensures design standards and styles are met, confirming to best practices and disability-usability standards.
  5. Assists with a variety of digital initiative projects including electronic resource management (ERM). Utilizes a variety of local and online resources to create and maintain links between research databases and full-text digital content which allows faculty, staff and students access to articles, sound recordings and videos in one location.
  6. Maintains accurate subscription holdings information including licensing information, subscription cost, subscription duration, topic coverage, contact information and user restrictions. Identifies overlap between print and web-based subscriptions and makes recommendations regarding whether to keep or cancel subscription(s).
  7. Works with database vendors to arrange for trial subscriptions; works with faculty librarians to collect feedback on database trials. Makes recommendations on database subscriptions to subscribe or cancel.
  8. Serves as liaison with vendors of web-based resources. Investigates problems received from library users, document errors, communicates with vendor technical support and reports problem resolutions.
  9. Participates on various committees.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in the library and occasionally in a classroom setting. Interruptions are expected and occur frequently and the incumbent must have the ability to prioritize work. Exposure to video display terminals occurs on a regular basis. Flexibility is needed to adapt to work schedule changes during breaks and summer term. Incumbent must stay current with evolving library technology. Incumbent will be required to drive between campuses using a personal vehicle.

Physical Requirements

Learned physical skills is required to perform keyboarding. Standing, walking, bending and occasional lifting may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree or two years of college level course work with a concentration in library science, computer science or related field. Experience performing the duties described above may substitute for post high school education on a year-for-year basis. Two years of experience operating automated library systems and working with various types of computer software and hardware preferably in an academic setting. Requires knowledge of library reference tools, techniques and electronic resources.

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational and time management skills and be detailed oriented. Must have the ability to train others and make presentations. Must have a working knowledge of various software applications such as Adobe Suite, HTML and Microsoft Office; JavaScript preferred. Must have experience creating and editing web pages.
