Job Summary

Responsible for coordinating district-wide media services function(s) such as audio visual, assistive technology and distance education. Performs project planning including defining functional objectives and developing procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Media Services Coordinator is distinguished from the Media Services Technician in that the Coordinator formulates district-wide project plans and oversees the implementation in addition to providing some day-to-day direct services. The Media Services Technician is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day responsibilities for an assigned campus.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Based on assignment, incumbent is responsible for coordinating a district-wide media service function(s) in collaboration with peers. Performs project planning and organizing including defining functional objectives and developing procedures for implementation. Participates in and/or oversees the work of media services functional project; identifies and resolves problems; monitors work flow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods and procedures.
  2. Provides information and assistance to faculty, staff and/or students regarding the operation of audio visual, assistive technology, distance education and related software. Develops and maintains training handouts and user help documents.
  3. Maintains audio visual, assistive technology and distance education equipment and software inventory control using web-based spreadsheets. Trains Media Service Technicians and student help regarding the equipment inventory process.
  4. Maintains detailed records to track life expectancy of equipment and to plan for replacements. Coordinates classroom technology installations and replacement schedules.
  5. Schedules, delivers and tracks media services equipment as necessary.
  6. Provides training for college faculty in the operation and implementation of media presentation tools as well as suggesting other technology tools that are available for use at the college. Recommends new tools to faculty after they have been tested and approved for use by the department.
  7. Recommends audio visual, assistive technology and distance education purchases, processes equipment and software orders; assists in the evaluation of equipment purchased and works with vendors to resolve problems.

Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree or two years of college level coursework in computer science discipline, media services or related area. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Two years experience working with various types of computer software and hardware, operating audio visual equipment and using automated recording systems.

Knowledge of:

Current computer software packages which may include HTML editors, web browsers, email, ftp, MS Office, computer operating systems, web design software, WebCT and the operational aspects of audio visual equipment.

Ability to:

Coordinate media service projects; meet college expectations regarding customer service; interact effectively with students, the public and college staff members; manage time/multi-task; effectively communicate both in writing and verbally; be an active listener; organize and keep records; remain calm under high pressure situations; analyze and resolve problems with minimal supervision; learn quickly and apply knowledge to new situations; oversee and train others in the operation of audio visual, assistive technology and distance education equipment.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in an office environment, library sites, instructor offices and classroom settings. Incumbent must stay current on presentation and assistive technology equipment and software. Exposure to video display terminals occurs with varied frequency. Use of carts and hand trucks required. Regular lifting of audio visual and assistive technology equipment/materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds for troubleshooting, repairs, etc. Prolonged standing may be required.
