Nature and Scope of Work

Under the direction of the Title III Grant Coordinator, the Retention Coordinator coordinates a broad range of activities and programs that support student success/goal attainment. The Coordinator will research student retention issues and develop programs, in conjunction with instructional and student development units, that will help ensure the success of at-risk-populations. Incumbent implements and evaluates policies, procedures and systems according to the Title III plan to improve student retention. Project requires collaboration with Information Technology and Student Services to design web-based student services. Areas of accountability include ensuring compliance with Title III and US DOE policies and grant guidelines as well as the preparation of progress reports to document project activity.

Highly developed verbal skills are required to communicate technical concepts and ideas to individuals and groups. Interactions occur with a diverse set of individuals representing a variety of roles and authority levels.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. In consultation with the Title III Grant Coordinator, ensures evaluation results are reflected in continued project and college operations and that Title III activities become institutionalized into PCC.
  2. Works with the faculty, student services staff, Office of Institutional Research and other members of the college community to identify populations of students who are most at risk on not completing their educational goals (e.g. first generation students, students of color, developmental education students) and designs Title III activities to improve student retention for these populations.
  3. Serves on the Title III Advising and Student Development Steering Subcommittees focusing on student development and advising issues that pertain to the grant outcomes.
  4. In consultation with the Title III Grant Coordinator, develops a district-wide plan to improve retention of students and attainment of their educational goals. The plan should incorporate the efforts of Advising, Learning Resource Specialists, Women’s Resource Center, Counseling and Career Centers in a focused manner that will have the greatest impact on student success. Work with faculty to encourage them to include retention strategies into instructional delivery methods.
  5. Designs and conducts student retention workshops for faculty and staff.
  6. Attends weekly staff meetings to ensure team members share a collective vision for project outcomes.
  7. Submits monthly reports to the Title III Grant Coordinator that reflect the percentage of time supported by Title III and PCC funds.
  8. Submits monthly progress reports to the Title III Grant Coordinator that note unanticipated delays, problems and solutions as well as coordination with all college departments.
  9. Assists the Title III Grant Coordinator in developing communication and information strategies to students, faculty, staff and the community on the Title III grant progress.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment with various committees and taskforces district-wide.

Physical Requirements

Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of every day objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily. Minimum physical exertion is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Liberal Arts, Social Science or related field. Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis. Demonstrated experience with student retention practices and programs. Demonstrated experience working with students in higher education setting. Experience designing and implementing successful strategies and programs involving faculty and staff. Ability to work with and effectively supervise a culturally, racially and gender diverse work team.

Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts and ideas to individuals and groups.
