Nature and Scope of Work
The Coordinator of Academic Advising coordinates a broad range of support activities to assure student success such as campus advising services, High School Completion, transfer services and retention. Key responsibilities consist of developing a campus wide advising program, coordinating the delivery of advising services with other campus programs, and providing direct support for areas such as High School Completion, Transfer Advising, Program Advising, International Student Advising and part-time Academic Advising Specialists at off-site locations.
- Develops a campus-wide advising program and coordinates the delivery of advising services with other campus programs (such as admissions, assessment, counseling, and financial aid) to provide seamless services for students.
- Coordinates with other campus staff to provide seminars for new students which include skills assessment, orientation and advising.
- Provides direct support for students in special programs such as High School Completion or International Students. Evaluate students’ academic history, develop academic goals, evaluate students’ transcripts, and advise into appropriate programs/courses. Introduce students to resources available through the college.
- Coordinates with the program directors to assure that admissions and advising are available for program participants. Assist in evaluating students’ academic history, developing academic goals, and introducing students to available resources.
- Maintains, reports and presents outcomes information for advising office, High School Completion and other programs.
- Coordinates with the department chair of counseling to schedule counselors drop-in advising schedules.
- Coordinates with the department chair of counseling to cross-train support staff to enhance the delivery of seamless service during the enrollment process.
- Coordinates with the counseling department chair to develop and implement retention initiatives for the Campus.
- Designs and provides advising training (e.g., seminars, workshops, etc.) to advisors, faculty, counselors and staff.
- Provides general advising services when needed.
- Works with management to develop, monitor and reconcile budgets.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Work is typically performed in an office environment. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
Travel between campuses and various remote sites requires the ability to drive and use of a personal vehicle. Occasional lifting of boxes for presentations, which may weigh up to 50 lbs. Long hours of standing on concrete floors during advising fairs and recruitment activities.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling, or related field. Experience performing the duties of the job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Demonstrated experience in program coordination. Demonstrated experience working in an educational or social service environment. Demonstrated experience working with at-risk and culturally diverse populations. Experience working with students or clients in advising and developing goals. Experience assessing student needs and coordinating educational services. Experience researching and interpreting complex rules/regulations. Experience reviewing or evaluating transcripts and placement test scores.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of PCC academic programs and requirements, student services policies and procedures, and campus resources.
- Considerable knowledge of techniques for compiling and reporting outcomes information.
- Knowledge of assessment, testing, and interpretation and application of test results.
- Knowledge of transfer requirements to four year institutions and articulation agreements.
- Knowledge of student retention strategies.
- Skill in operating a computer and various supporting software packages.
- Skill in delivering public presentations and designing training sessions.
- Skill in effective advising techniques.
- Ability to work with at-risk and culturally diverse populations.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work in an environment with regular interruption.
