Assistant Student Leadership Coordinator

Nature and Scope of Work

Under the general direction of the Student Leadership Coordinator, the incumbent assists with the administration of ASPCC student leadership and other student programs including participating in program development, day-to-day operations, student supervision, and budget monitoring.  The Assistant Student Leadership Coordinator also provides oversight and coordination of student campus organizations and clubs.  Works with and advises campus chapters of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Assists the Student Leadership Coordinator in the oversight of the ASPCC student leadership programs.  Participates in designing and implementing leadership development programs.   Advises ASPCC leaders on methods and processes.  Trains students on program planning and mentors them throughout the year.  Advises the Student Programming Board.
  2. Oversees assigned budgets, coordinates fundraising activities, and collaborates with other PCC departments and programs regarding ASPCC programs and activities.
  3. Identifies appropriate conferences for ASPCC leaders to attend.  Makes travel arrangements.  Attends conferences and meetings with students, serving as an advisor and college representative.  Mediates situations as needed during these events.
  4. Provides direction to ASPCC students, work study, casual employees and volunteers.  Helps with the hiring and training of student workers.  Participates in performance evaluations and corrective action with ASPCC student leaders and staff.
  5. Coordinates and oversees the student clubs and organizations.  Advises and mentors student club coordinators, officers and members.  Develops and implements club policies and procedures.   Advises leaders on methods and processes for chartering clubs.  Develops and executes trainings and outreach programs for club leaders and advisors.  Oversees club budgets and fundraising accounts.  Coordinates events and club travel.
  6. Trains faculty club advisors on methods and processes, and assists them in problem solving.  Informs faculty on expectations of club advisor role and financial and human resources available to them.  Provides club advisors with information on liability issues and insurance procedures for club events.  Helps club advisors develop an appropriate feedback mechanism for evaluating their student leaders.
  7. Assists student club organizers and staff/faculty advisors in fundraising procedures and money management set forth by the State of Oregon and PCC policy.  Helps students manage their student activity funds and fundraising accounts.
  8. Coordinates district-wide events, activities and programs that may involve interaction with other campus ASPCC staff and students, the District Student Council and District Student Programming Board, and other PCC departments.   Develops promotional materials and performs event oversight.
  9. Assists the Student Leadership Coordinator with the coordination of intramural and intercollegiate athletic activities for assigned campus.  Works with Facility Scheduling and Facilities Management Services regarding the planning and setup of various activities.  Participates in the hiring and training of student workers who help plan and develop a program that meets the needs and interests of a diverse student population.
  10. Serves as club advisor to Phi Theta Kappa.  Advises, trains and mentors Phi Theta Chapter Officer Team.  Establishes district, regional and national connections.  Oversees budget and fundraising account.  Coordinates annual induction ceremony, group service projects, and member orientations.  May teach the Phi Theta Kappa course on Leadership through the Classics.
  11. Collaborates with various College departments across the district regarding policy interpretation and development for student clubs and organizations; creation of risk and liability waivers for events and activities; development of club catering menu; and supervision and direction of International Student Program Assistants.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed in various settings, both on campus and off.  The position requires flexible work hours including evenings, weekends and some holidays.  Frequent travel with student leaders is required and travel between campuses may require the use of a personal vehicle.  Work often involves extensive use of a computer requiring long periods of time sitting and viewing a monitor.  Significant time is spent using the telephone.

Physical Requirements

This position requires occasional lifting of office supplies, training materials and computer equipment.  Using a ladder at times may be required in advertising events.  Incumbents may be required to drive and transport students to events.  Frequent walking, lifting, bending and pulling of equipment is required to set up and take down equipment used for special events.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Student Development, Counseling, Communications, Social Science or related field.  Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.

Demonstrated experience in public speaking.  Demonstrated experience in conducting student leadership training programs, program planning and development, and needs assessment in a college environment is required.  A working knowledge of word processing, data base and/or spreadsheet applications is required.  Experience facilitating, mediating and problem solving in a group environment with a diverse student population is required.  Driver’s license and good driving record are required.
