Job Summary

Under the direction of management, the Landscape Technology Coordinator is responsible for the operations of the Landscape Technology Department (LAT) at the Rock Creek Campus and provides outreach activities. Directly supports the LAT Program through the purchase and care of plants, materials and landscape equipment required by the program, coordinating support activities, and working with students to enhance their learning and maintaining LAT teaching spaces. Maintains and restores the Landscape Technology “living lab” and landscape (4 acres). Responsible for care and maintenance of the plantings, irrigation installation and repair, and greenhouse, hoop house and facilities management and coordination of building 4 and the surrounding spaces. Interpersonal contacts extend to College staff and faculty, students, the public, vendors and external agencies including the Washington County Master Gardeners. 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. In collaboration with the Dean and LAT program leaders, makes decisions on landscape usage around building 4 including landscape designs and landscape installation.
  2. Organizes and coordinates use of the space including the landscape, greenhouse, hoop house and pole barn while adhering to the College’s standards.
  3. In collaboration with the Dean and the LAT Program, works with contract teams to develop any required contracts.
  4. Coordinates the maintenance of facilities, such as building 4, greenhouse, pole barn, and hoop house, with FMS.
  5. Monitors pests in the greenhouse and performs pest control;
  6. In partnership with other College program staff, LAT program staff, and the Program Dean, creates innovative ways of incorporating Landscape resources and activities into course and program outcomes (e.g environmental science, landscaping, art, etc.). Conducts tours for PCC classes, K-12 classes, and other entities. Expands and/or supports Community Education, CEU, and academic non-credit class offerings.
  7. Performs and coordinates maintenance of the LAT grounds including the operation of heavy equipment. Manage casual employees and contractors in maintaining the grounds.
  8. Purchases and performs routine maintenance on landscaping equipment. Schedules and outsources maintenance as appropriate. Researches and purchases new equipment as needed by the department.
  9. Performs routine maintenance and installation of irrigation systems.  Schedules and outsources maintenance on the irrigation system as appropriate.
  10. Communicates updates with the Program Dean, LAT program staff, other College faculty/staff, and outside partners.
  11. Maintains LAT records including equipment inventory and maintenance records, asset management documentation, budget tracking tools, and inventory tracking tools.
  12. Coordinates materials for LAT classes and assists with instruction;
  13. Coordinates with internal and external partners.
  14. Hires, trains, schedules, and oversees casual employees.
  15. Attends LAT meetings, LAT Advisory committees, and other LAT Program meetings. Participates in special projects to support the College and the LAT program as needed.
  16. Stays abreast of current trends in landscape methodologies.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is often performed in a variety of settings, often a lab or outdoor environment, caring for the landscape and equipment.  Work hours vary with the season and the requirements of the program. Evening and weekend work may be required. Requires occasional physical effort such as lifting, digging, and extensive walking/standing.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in Landscape Technology, Horticulture, or related discipline or equivalent experience in the field. Two years (2) experience working in the landscape industry; performing landscape maintenance, operating and performing minor troubleshooting for landscape equipment, installing and working with irrigation systems or managing properties.
