Course Description

Students work at approved job sites to receive as varied and complete a job experience as possible under job conditions. Designed to meet the needs of the individual student and the conditions of the work site. Goals for each student are established by written Learning Objectives between the student and work site, approved by the Instructor or program. Department approval and completion of 18 credits hours in Paralegal Program (unless waived by the Department) are required. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to practice skills at a work site

as a paralegal intern.  This experience may be paid or unpaid.  Students will be trained, supervised and evaluated by lawyers, paralegal supervisors or other appropriate professional staff.  Work experience provides students an opportunity to apply classroom coursework in the legal field and may be added to their resume to reflect hands-on experience. Students are primarily responsible for locating the placement, but they will receive assistance and support from PCC’s career services department, the department chair and instructor for the course.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Specific student outcomes will be identified and listed on the

Learning Objectives Form utilized for each placement and

approved by the instructor for each student. Outcomes will

depend on the needs of each student and placement resource at

the work site. Upon completion of the course, the student will

have obtained the following outcomes:

Work productively in the legal field

Apply classroom skills and demands of work in the legal field

Understand skills and demands of work in the legal field

Communicate appropriately in a professional setting

Work professionally and ethically pursuant to law office

professional standards

Explore legal career opportunity

Obtain on-the-job training in legal field

 

Course Activities and Design

A.  Students will select an appropriate work site approved by instructor

B.  Work agreement is completed establishing the goals for the student, duties and

            responsibilities of student and the work site.

C. Student completes the internship and maintains record of hours on the job

 D. Evaluations will include student, work site and instructor evaluations with one

     work site visit by the instructor (unless telephone visit is the only practical option)

 

Credit will be Pass/No Pass.

Student will complete the Learning Objectives Form which needs to be approved by the instructor for each student. The instructor will visit the worksite to evaluate student success.  However, upon completion of the course, each student will have had the opportunity to

obtain work in the legal field; specific training in the legal field; explored career opportunity;

applied classroom skills to a legal office setting; and gained better understanding of the skills and demands of the legal field
