Course Description

Explores fitness instruction and leadership for older adult populations. Provides tools and information needed to design fitness training programs for healthy older individuals and groups. Prerequisites: FT 202. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Design and implement health and fitness assessments and programming for older adults based on scientific foundations.
  2. Apply effective teaching strategies in older adult fitness instruction.
  3. Apply motivational strategies to promote participation in older adult fitness activities.
  4. Explore current trends and employment opportunities for fitness instruction in older adult populations.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. Apply Motivation and exercise adherence strategies.

  2. Identify and implement safety for individuals, equipment, and facilities. 

  3. Examine and implement pre-exercise screening tools and fitness assessments.

  4. Plan and administer fitness programming and prescription. 

  5. Provide exercise modifications, as needed. 

  6. Discuss additional wellness issues for older adults (housing, nutrition, recreation, etc.)

  7. Identify certifications and employment opportunities.
