Course Description
Continues to build upon the skills covered in Rock Climbing I. Introduces plans to improve bouldering climbing technique, muscular strength and muscular endurance. Promotes climbing safety, proper gear and its use, movement over rock, back rock rescue, climbing etiquette, and environmental concerns. May include advanced belay techniques, belay/rappel transitions, and anchor building in a sport climbing environment. Prerequisites: PE 183D or equivalent bouldering and belay techniques. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Requirement: The ability to travel to local indoor rock climbing gyms or the Rock Creek gym wall to practice techniques and skills. Transportation to and from the climbing facility, as well as the ability to pay a facility use fee to the climbing facility. Facility use fee varies. Possibility of outdoor climbing.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate correct climbing technique as covered in the class.
- Demonstrate good decision making and safe climbing practices.
- Demonstrate correct lead climbing practices, including correct clipping, rope positioning relative to the body, falling technique, and belay technique.
- Demonstrate how to correctly “thread the anchors”.
Aspirational Goals
1. Engage regularly in skill development, safety practices, and fundamentals of rock climbing to develop overall physical fitness and enhance sport activities.
Course Activities and Design
Travel to local indoor rock climbing gyms or use of the Rock Creek gym wall to practice techniques and skills. Possibility to travel to outdoor areas for climbing.
