Course Description

Covers combinational and sequential logic devices and their applications. Includes the operation of logic gates, latches and flip-flops, and their use in functions such as encoders, decoders, multiplexers, demultiplexers, ripple and synchronous counters, shift registers, and memories. Labs emphasize the designing and troubleshooting aspects of logic circuits to which such devices apply. Prerequisites: MT 121A. Prerequisites/concurrent: MT 106 or MTH 65, or any course for which MTH 65 is a prerequisite, or equivalent placement. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

The laboratory portion of this course provides students with the opportunity to develop skills in the operation of common electronic instruments (dc power supply, digital multimeter, signal generator, and oscilloscope) and to learn strategies of troubleshooting logic circuits. Students will work in teams of two or more to perform and complete laboratory exercises which will be mostly aimed at diagnosing and troubleshooting electronic circuits based on combinational logic such as multiplexor, demultiplexor, encoder, decoder, and sequential logic devices such as latches, flip flops and their applications. Students must be able to communicate, both in oral and written form.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Construct circuits and use oscilloscopes and multimeters to test circuits which incorporate combinational and sequential logic devices.
  2. Interpret technical materials e.g. schematic diagrams and device data sheets.
  3. Use Boolean algebra logic to design basic logic circuits.
  4. Develop general troubleshooting strategies to diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctioning logic circuits.
  5. Communicate technical information effectively in written and oral form.

Course Activities and Design

The course will include a variety of learning activities. The lecture portion of the course will include instructor delivered lectures and demonstrations stressing key concepts. In preparation for the lecture portion of the course, students will be expected to complete all reading and homework assignments. The laboratory portion of the course is intended to enhance skills related to the operation of common electronic test instruments, to logic circuit analysis and troubleshooting, successful teamwork, and oral and written communication.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment of student performance will be conducted in both the lecture and the laboratory portions of the course and may be in the form of written and/or practice-based questions.
