Course Description

Covers concepts of disease processes as they relate to the normal physiology of the major body systems. Prerequisites: Admission to the Medical Assistant program.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate concepts in anatomy and pathophysiology through verbal and written means in both individual and small-group settings.
  2. Understand risk factors of disease and how they relate to disease processes.
  3. Understand how the various organ systems are interrelated, and use this understanding to promote a whole-body approach towards the evaluation and treatment of patients.
  4. Understand the basis for select laboratory tests and other diagnostic procedures.
  5. Make correlations between pathophysiology and clinical skills learned in the medical assisting program.
  6. Apply concepts learned in the classroom toward successful clinical problem-solving and effective patient care.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students learning outcomes will be assessed by either exams, assignments, quizzes, small or large group discussions. Answer theoretical and application multiple choice questions on information covered in the lecture and reading assignments. Complete a variety of work assignments to demonstrate understanding of basic concepts. Below are the CAAHEP learning outcomes for this course.

Anatomy & Physiology:

Identify common pathology related to each body system including signs, symptoms, etiology, diagnostic measures and treatment modalities, including CLIA-waived tests associated with common diseases.

Nutrition:

Identify the special dietary needs for: weight control, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, lactose sensitivity, gluten-free, and food allergies.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Subject Matter, Concepts, Themes, Issues:
The following list outlines the concepts, themes and issues you need to understand and be able to use appropriately. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding in written and oral form, individually and in groups. See attached.
