Course Description

Covers the transformation of existing leased space. Involves creation of a design solution for a small business. Prerequisites: ID 125 and ID 131, and (WR 115 and RD 115) or IRW 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course student should be able to:

  1. Gather pre-design information, establish project code compliance requirements, and create an existing conditions report for a small commercial space.
  2. Communicate the design process along the way with presentations and explanations of the various steps and procedures necessary for the final design solution.
  3. Create a final design solution for a small business that will promote success, accessibility and sustainability.

Course Activities and Design

The studio will support projects of many natures.  These activities will include group research into project typology.  Research on accessibility, ADA compliance and universal design will be required.  Sustainability in mechanical upgrades, illumination, case-goods design and material selections will be accomplished through research and presentations. Computer drafting, elevation and plan drawings, and other drawing types will be explored.  Final design solution presentation will be necessary to communicate intent.

Instructors will be encouraged to utilize rubrics when evaluating student work.
