Course Description
Introduces working with the Linux/UNIX family of operating systems. Explores the use of operating system utilities such as text editors, electronic mail, file management, scripting, and C/C++ compilers. Discusses trends in Linux/UNIX, including use of graphical user interfaces. Recommended: CS 160 or CIS 121. Audit available. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Identify and use Linux/UNIX utilities to perform simple file processing operations, organize directory structures with appropriate security, and develop shell scripts to perform more complex tasks.
- Use the Linux/UNIX system effectively to accomplish typical personal, office, technical, and software development tasks.
- Monitor system performance and network activities.
- Use technical documentation to complete computing tasks, prepare simple readable user documentation and adhere to style guidelines.
- Discuss open source community, history, ecosystem, and tools.

Topics include: task scheduling and management, memory management, input/output processing, internal and external commands, shell configuration, and shell customization.
